The ACCEL Schools Difference

We are a proud member of ACCEL Schools—a public charter school network serving thousands of PK-12 students throughout the United States. ACCEL was founded in 2012 by the early pioneers of online learning. Our leadership believes that all children, regardless of location or socio-economic background, deserve a quality education that prepares them to succeed in school and become productive global citizens.

ACCEL Schools Instructional Model provides:

  • Aligned Academics meet or exceed state standards ensuring your child is on track for rigorous college and career opportunities.
  • Certified, Licensed Teachers and a student-centered staff are united in executing our mission to make a difference in the life trajectory of each student.
  • More Time on Task and double the instructional minutes for ELA and Math maximizes learning in your child’s school day.
  • Short Cycle Assessments keep track of how students are progressing in the program, giving teachers ongoing feedback so they can tailor instruction to your student’s needs.
  • Individualized Instruction driven by assessment data means we are familiar with the needs of each child and set students up for success in each course of study.
  • State Testing Preparation reduces the anxiety often associated with high stakes tests, helping our teachers and students feel confident with the structure and methodology of state exams.
  • Academic Support including education technology, interventional specialists, and instructional aides assist students during the school day. After school tutoring, summer school, and Saturday school programs extend support services beyond the traditional school day and year.
  • Extracurricular Courses & Activities round out our educational offerings providing students social-emotional learning, athletics, arts, service learning & more.

Hello Middle school math families! This upcoming week, students will be taking the iReady math diagnostic. Students should be spending an average of 20 minutes a day on iReady math. They have access to this tool, and it is focused on their own personal growth throughout the school year. This is unique, because it gives students the opportunity to show us what they’ve learned, without the pressure of state standards or being compared to peers across the state. We are working hard this year to stay engaged in our lessons and prepare for next year. It’s never too soon to start learning.

Happy Friday parents! We are so close to the end of the year. At Riverside we are committed to ending this school year strong and setting students up for success for the remainder of the year and moving forward. We know that it can be hard to keep students motivated and engaged in school these last few weeks so here are some tips to help make sure our kiddos are finishing strong:

  • Make school attendance a priority and talk about the importance of showing up to school every day.
  • Help your child maintain daily routines, such as finishing homework and getting a good night’s sleep.
  • Try not to schedule dental and medical appointments during the school day.
  • Don’t let your child stay home unless truly sick. Complaints of headaches or stomachaches may be signs of anxiety.
  • Find out if your child feels engaged by his classes and feels safe from mistreatment. Make sure he/she is not missing class because of behavioral issues and school discipline policies. If any of these are problems, work with your school.
  • Stay on top of academic progress and seek help from teachers or tutors if necessary. Make sure teachers know how to contact you.
  • Talk to teachers if you notice sudden changes in behavior. These could be tied to something going on at school.
  • Check on your child’s attendance to be sure absences are not piling up.
  • Ask for help from school officials, afterschool programs, other parents, or community agencies if you’re having trouble getting your child to school.

We enjoy seeing our kiddos bright faces every day and want to work hard to continue to support positive behaviors, attendance, and motivation for our remaining time together before summer break! Here’s to another great week! 🙂

Music

Ms. Sargent

This week in Music class, students in grades 2-8 traveled to the state of Texas to learn about their contributions to early American music. They also met the famous pop star, Billie Eilish! Kindergarten and first grade students got to learn about the role of the drumline this week. At the end of next week, students in all grades can look forward to watching some music-themed movies!
Students, make sure you bring your recorders on Fridays!

In writing students finished their earth day writing. Students made a craft to go with their writing, using old cds and turning them into fish art. As one way we talked about helping our planet was reusing items in new ways!

Have a great first week of May!

Hello families! This week we learned about weather. Tornados, Hurricanes, and Blizzards! A summer school program form was sent out to the students on Wednesday! Make sure to fill it out and bring it back to school if interested. We will continue to work on reading comprehension and fluency. I encourage students to read or journal at home to get some extra practice! iReady is also a great option if you have computer access! Thank you. Have a wonderful weekend.

Fourth and Fifth Grade

Ms. Kenner

This week in 5th grade math, we are focusing on measurement and units. In 4th grade, we are working on adding and subtracting fractions. In English, we just started reading Bridge to Terabithia, and we are working with Informational Text and Text Comprehension. In Social Studies, we are learning about the Revolutionary War and the Pilgrims coming off of the Mayflower!

Students are doing a fantastic job tracking their Iready Minutes! The goal is to have 75 minutes (at least) by Friday in both math and reading (15 minutes a day). If your student is staying home but is not sick, I would encourage them to still get their minutes in at home. Also, if you are interested in re-enrolling for next year, we will be giving out free long sleeve t-shirts to students who turn in their re-enrollment form and proof of address. It should be noted that proof of address should be something from the past 30 days.

We have one more test to go during the week of 5/10/21 ! This week in ELA class we will be reviewing the vocabulary words we’ve learned to support success on the test. The higher students matriculate in school, the more important content specific (domain specific) vocabulary knowledge is. Knowing what the graders are expecting to see when they ask a student a question regarding theme vs tone, for example totally makes or breaks the question. If you want to help your student prepare for the test: Go to the Resource module in Canvas, then click on the “Academic Vocabulary” option in their ELA class. Printed copies of the vocabulary words are also available.

Hello Middle school families! Math State testing is complete for most students, but the school year is not over! It’s important not to lose focus. We need to prepare our students for their next year in school and make sure they do not have gaps in knowledge over the summer. In math, we will focus on reviewing all the new concepts we have learned over the year, and also begin some new concepts that will carry over into next year. It’s important that we also get ready for the last big test of the year, the iReady Spring Diagnostic. Students should be spending an average of 20 minutes a day on iReady math. They have access to this tool, and it is focused on their own personal growth throughout the school year. This is unique, because it gives students the opportunity to show us what they’ve learned, without the pressure of state standards or being compared to peers across the state. However that does not mean there is not work to be done. Make sure you are keeping up with you lessons to keep up your great grades. Now as we are wrapping up we need to look ahead. 8th graders I hope you have already started applying to high schools for next year. If you need help just ask me (That is for students or parents). 6th and 7th graders make sure you have re-enrolled here next year. I want you all back. 6th grade we have done a great job on cells and are going to continue. 7th grade we are moving to the Energy Pyramid. 8th grade we will be dropping stuff with Newton and the laws of Gravity. Stay safe and have a great weekend as always.

Many parents and guardians have been asking how they can help improve their student’s reading skills this summer. An excellent website is: https://improvingliteracy.org/family. This website has 30 minutes or less videos that will give you great ideas to help improve your student’s reading skills. The videos give tips and strategies and you can choose the age group you would like to learn about and then pick specific titles of videos. The Sped Team wants to encourage everyone to talk to your children about reading this summer.

Physical Education

Mr. Louis
plouis@acariverside.com

Spring has sprung and the warm weather has come with it. With the increase in temperatures, it is important to send students to school with water bottles and weather appropriate clothes for Physical Education. Lighter garments include short sleeve shirts, shorts, and gym shoes. Have students bring water bottles filled with water to begin the day. Please refrain from Gatorade or high sugar beverages. Gatorade can be a good electrolyte replenishment but if spilled on the gym floor can cause a sticky mess! The warmer the weather gets; the more students need to stay hydrated throughout the day. We will finish the year strong with elementary fitness and middle school football as well as assessments.

From the Nurse…

Hello Riverside Parents,

I sent out Vision and Hearing referral letters in early March for children who either failed or were not able to be tested. Referral letters indicate your child needs to be seen by a physician, and the form needs to return to the school.  Please have forms completed and returned to the school by 05/12/2021.

If a physician tested your child, we still need the form completed with their findings, and the condition returned to the school.  Any questions or concerns, please contact the school and speak with the school nurse.

Thanks,

If you do not have time to practice math facts with your child, I recommend they make flash cards! We also researched a country this week The students got to choose which country they wanted to research. They all learned lots of new facts! Ask your child about the country they researched! 2nd grade will do some reviewing next week with telling time and money. We will work on reading comprehension next week as well! If your child is absent and you have computer access, please have them login to their iReady. 20+ minutes for reading and 20+ minutes for math! Thank you! Have a great weekend!

Hello Middle School Math Families. The school year may be winding down, but the learning opportunities are everywhere! Until the end of the school year will be focusing on math that we use at home and math that will start us off in the next grade level. It is important that students be exposed to math that Parents do every day too! If you have the opportunity, allow your student to pay for items at the store. Ask ahead of time if they know what their change should be before the clerk announces it. Ask your student to help with time and scheduling. If you need to be somewhere at a certain time, have your student tell you how long you have until that time, how long it will take to get there, and what time you need to leave to be on time. These are examples of math that we do as adults without thinking too much about it, but they are also examples of math that is very relevant to our middle school minds. The iReady diagnostic is also coming up in May. Please make sure your student is practicing their iReady my path. This practice can be done at home on your home device. Please call the school if you need help logging on.

Social Studies

They will present them at the end of next week. I’m looking forward to seeing their presentations!

You need to contact the school and make sure you get all your tests done. Now on to more pleasant news. Re-enrollment, save your space for next year. Riverside Academy wants you back. Also if you know anyone who wants to change schools, is new to the area, or has a kindergarten you can send them our way. On to even better news MAY 19th, let me say that again MAY 19th we are going to celebrate the 8th graders here after school. I hope to see all my 8th graders one last time there. Now we still have 5 weeks left there is still work to do. 6th grade is working on a comic and asexual and sexual reproduction (at the cellular levels). 7th grade Food Chains, Food Webs and Energy Pyramids oh my! 8th grade we are going to get electric. As always stay safe.

Hi families! As the end of the school year is approaching it can be tempting for our students to get restless. With summer approaching and the days winding down it is common for behaviors to intensify. This would be a great time to review coping skills and strategies with students. Some simple coping skills are taking deep breaths when frustrated or overwhelmed, asking for a break when fatigued and talking with an adult when you need extra support in dealing with difficult situations. Students benefit from a good’s night rest, a consistent sleep schedule, healthy meals, and various opportunities to stay active and involved outside of school! Let’s work together to keep our kids healthy mentally, physically, and emotionally as we finish our year strong.

Hello Families,
5th graders only have science testing this coming week! Please make sure students are getting enough sleep so they can perform their best and show what they know! It would be a great idea to practice shapes at home.
This week in reading, students are finishing up the novel Holes. We are having a book celebration on Friday, April 23rd. If you would like to donate the following items for our celebration, that would be greatly appreciated. Oreos, pretzels, 2-liter drinks of any sort, canned peaches, candy peaches, donut holes. We have one more round of test sessions during the week of May 10th, so please mark your calendars and encourage your students to stay motivated for that one as well. iReady test results can be super informative and helpful to parents especially with summer approaching. The test results reveal your student’s approximate grade level in reading, and specific areas of reading that the student does well in and may need additional support.

This week in reading we are working on poetry, and continuing our practice with forms of figurative language and plot elements.

This Test will take place in Early May.

As a side note, warmer weather is approaching and water fountains in the school are still unavailable for health and safety reasons. Please send your student to school with a personal water bottle.

Social Studies

This week in social studies, the 8th Grade finished up their Industrial Revolution DBQ’s. I’m very proud of the students who have finished projects! The 7th Grade continued to learn about the Mongols and their interactions in China. The 6th Grade finished up their Assessment Days for Polytheistic Religions. Remember, all students can work on any Leveled work (work from assessment days) until the end of the quarter. If those essays aren’t done- they can work on them! Have a great weekend!

Hello Lions,
Two test down and for many students that means they are finished. But not our mighty 5th and 8th graders. Next week you have the SCIENCE test! Woo Who! Make sure 5th and 8th graders that you are here Monday and Tuesday or Tuesday and Wednesday depending upon your testing window. Also reminders Kindergarten to 7th graders re-enroll for next year. I know I hear, we are moving, we are going to a different school, and many other reasons. Save you spot if you leave it cost you nothing. But if there is a change in plans and you want to come back home to Riverside, we don’t want you to lose your spot here. 21 years here I have seen it time and again. On to the next week. 6th grade you are going to be creating a cartoon about the process of Asexual reproduction next week. 7th grade we are going to be on Food Chains and Food Webs. 8th grade we will continue with the Force.
Stay safe.

Hello Parents and Guardian. Riverside Academy uses Positive Behavioral Interventions and Supports (PBIS) to help your students reach their fullest potential and to provide a safe and nurturing environment for our students. Studies have shown that students excel when students and schools work together. Here are some ways you can incorporate PBIS in your home.

  1. Talk with your child about how you expect him or her to behave at school.
  2. Ask your child’s teacher, principal or school counselor about the positive behaviors the school teaches.
  3. Let your school know how you would like to be involved in supporting positive behaviors at school.
  4. Talk to your child’s teacher or school counselor if you have questions or concerns about your child’s behavior. We want to help.

The following information was taken from Ohio Families Engage at OSU if you would like more information. The Special Education Team would be glad to answer any questions.

Music

Ms. Sargent

This week in Music class, students in grades 2-8 got to create a pretend band, and an album cover, too!  Kindergarten and first grade students got to learn about the Ukulele this week. Keep up the great work on your tests, students!

Physical Education

Mr. Louis
plouis@acariverside.com

This week brought testing and an opportunity for us to get outside! Middle school did a great job working on their fitness checklist. If they did it well, your middle schoolers would have come home feeling sore! Fitness and outdoor activities will be a priority moving forward if weather allows.

Kindergarten and First Grade

Ms. Zwirgzdas
azwirgzdas@acariverside.com

This week the older grades have been testing. Kindergarten and First graders have done an excellent job being flexible with all the changes. So a big pat on the back for them! This week we continued counting tens and ones with cubes, and extended this to compare two numbers to tell which was greater or less than. In reading we read the text Nate is late which focuses on forming an opinion after sequencing events in order. Students pea plants went home this week. Please water them every other day, keep them in direct sunlight. You may also want to tie them with a twist tie to a chop stick when the vines grow longer for extra support.

Have a great weekend Miss. Z

Second and Third Grade

Miss DeLong
vdelong@acariverside.com

Hello! This week, 3rd graders did a wonderful job testing! The 2nd grade did a wonderful job accommodating to the testing schedule. They practiced multiplication facts this week! 3rd grade did a wonderful job reviewing for the test along with multiplication as well. We finished our Magic School Bus book, The Truth About Bats. Ask your child what they learned about bats! We will start a new book next week!

Fourth and Fifth Grade

Ms. Kenner
akenner@acariverside.com

Hello Families,
Students have math testing this coming week! Please make sure students are getting enough sleep so they can perform their best and show what they know! It would be a great idea to practice shapes at home.
This week in 4th and 5th grade, we continued reading the novel Holes. This is a book about a boy who is sent to a camp to dig holes as punishment, but finds the camp has more than meets the eye. We will be spending the next 5 weeks reading and writing the book as well as learning new vocabulary words.

Hi Riverside Families!

Since this we have begun State Testing this week, I wanted to send you some tips to review with your kiddos at home regarding state testing. These tips are helpful for all students but especially students with disabilities.

  1. Emphasize Learning– testing has its place and is important for various reasons. When talking about taking state tests always emphasize how being a great learner is the priority, not just being a great test taker. Discuss how tests are there to help see all that we know, have learned and what we can continue to work on.
  2. Preparation– It will significantly help reduce anxiety to talk with students about what to expect from tests, what’s normal and allow them to process through those feelings, fears and questions ahead of time.
  3. Comfort (specifically for students with disabilities)- Allow students to know what works for them and what helps them be their best test taker. Maybe it’s a wiggly seat, knowing when to ask for a break or having a fidget.
  4. Taking Your Time– Encourage students to take their time, practice filling in bubbles properly (3rd grade), how to carefully read instructions and take their time constructing written responses.
  5. Rest– It is so important to make sure your child is getting an adequate amount of sleep in general and is sticking to a healthy bedtime routine.
  6. Fun– Keep it lighthearted, tell your child a joke on the way to school, help plan a fun activity after they have had a long day of testing to unwind and look forward to.

We all know testing can take a toll on our students, but we are in this together. It’s so important that we are working together at home and school to help our students do their best and be their best while showing Riverside Pride!

Music

Ms. Sargent
hsargent@acariverside.com

This week in Music class, students in grades 2-5 got to research a musician of their choice, and present their findings to the class! Kindergarten and first grade students got to learn about the Piano this week. Middle school students have music class only on Fridays during testing!

April Showers bring May flowers! Man has this year flown by.  But we still have lots of things to do.  Number one I can’t wait to meet the virtual kiddos I have never met and see some old faces on Monday when we start testing.  Make sure you are here ready to go on Monday and Tuesday.  Hybrid kids I will see you on Tuesday and Wednesday.  We have reading next week, then math and finally my favorite SCIENCE test!  Number two don’t forget about re-enrollment.  I want all my 6th and 7th graders back as 7th and 8th graders next year.  Finally make sure you are staying up on your work and classes.  If you ever have questions call or email me.  On to next week….6th grade we are continuing to work on cells (this will be our last topic) so ask questions about what we are learning about.  There will be a short cycle next week or the week after (depending on timing).  7th grade we will finish the cycles of the Earth, the Sun and Moon and there will be a short cycle then we move into energy flow in ecosystems (which is one of my favorite topics), 8th grade we have ended heredity and moving on to FORCES (May the Force be with you) that would be cool but we are doing magnetism (we will be doing this with a sprinkling of state testing review).  As always have fun.

Hello Parents and Guardians,

With the weather getting warmer, it’s a great time to get outdoors and explore your neighborhood parks. Eden Park near Walnut Hills and Mt. Adams has walking paths, gardens, and views of the river. This is a great place for your children to hike and bike. There’s a playground for hours of make-believe. You can also go on a bug hunt or look for deer or other park animals. One of our favorite games is ABC Architecture Scavenger Hunt. Have your students look for letters in architecture and structures. How many can you find in playground equipment? The special education team hopes you and your family enjoy the spring weather and are able to get out and enjoy nature as well.

Greetings!

Ms. Patton here, reporting in about the Hybrid Elementary class. This is a full two days of online learning with the in school experience for K-5.  Kindergarten through Fifth grade students have live Science, Math, and English Language sessions. These elementary students can interact with teachers and other students who are online, to learn and achieve the same goals. They also have daily assignments that they work on with my assistance and supervision. There is never a dull moment as they are continually learning all day with an online Math and English interactive learning program called IReady. This class is very active on DOJO, our students are all logged in as well as most parents. If you have not joined I would encourage you to do so.  Email me and I will get you connected to our daily activities as well as daily pictures: lpurvis@acariverside.com.  I look forward to watching your child progress through to the end of the year. Have a blessed day.
