Dear Parents and Guardians,

We are so thankful to Amazon for the generous donation of physical education equipment. Covid has changed the way we do “gym,” so we were in need of equipment that would get students up and moving but also maintain physical distancing, Amazon came through for us with jump ropes, hula hoops, bubble kits, and yoga mats. Amazon is a great neighbor and partner!

Pictured above are second and third graders preparing for yoga.

Sincerely,
Ms. Lucas, Principal

Dismissal

We love all of our Riverside students! For our students that attend in person, we have several dismissal procedures in place to keep them safe.

  1. Walkers are dismissed at 3:15 P.M.
  2. Bus riders are called as the busses arrive.
  3. Students who are picked up are called as their rides arrive. Parents and guardians must stay in their cars, maintain one lane while waiting, and continue to pull forward when possible.

If a student needs to leave school early, a parent must come in and sign them out. Any time missed DOES count towards truancy.  if you need to call the office regarding a dismissal change, please call before 2:45. We do not dismiss students between 3:00 P.M. and 3:15 P.M. Thanks!

Reminder

With colder weather comes changes in what students want to wear in the building. However, coats and hoodies may not be worn. This is a Board policy that is explained in the Student-Parent Handbook. If students are cold, they may wear only solid colored white, gray, navy, black, or beige knitted cardigans or knitted pullover sweaters. Thank you for your help with this! If you have questions, please call me any time.

Hello parents!

Happy Thanksgiving in advance! Approaching break Kindergarteners got to work learning about picture graphs in Math. Students learned to form and write words about the letter I. In first grade students continued to work vowels with a silent E sound. First graders are practicing how to form an opinion based on the text they read. In math students were working on adding 3 numbers together, counting  “ how many” tens and ones.

Reminder – don’t forget to have students working on their science course work. We do not have live sessions for these subjects. However, there are still lessons and assignments to complete. For first graders, they are working on phases of the moon. Kindergarteners are working on the life cycle of the butterfly!

Please continue to enjoy your break and stay safe.

Hello Families,

The students in both 4th and 5th grade are going to be starting a new writing project, research reports on states! Students have selected their states, and I have sent questionnaires to other teachers in their selected states. I am planning to have a virtual writing celebration when the students are done with this project, and will give you more information as we get closer. I am also going to be sending home current grades, as well as IXL improvement numbers by Friday, December 4th. Please be on the lookout for that. I am happy to announce that almost the entire class earned the behavior award of Fun Friday last week! Remember you as the parent/guardian can always see the behavior points they have earned by logging into Class Dojo. If you need assistance with this, please let me know. Remember that with colder weather students might need long sleeve polos or sweaters to wear in class (nothing with a hood). Happy Holidays!

We are back and ready to start the second half of the quarter with fervor! Midway through our week we will have short cycle assessments on standards R.I.6.3, R.L.7.3 and R.I.8.5. We will end our week with introductions to standards R.I.6.4, R.I.7.4, R.I.8.2. A website that is a great tool for helping your student is youtube. A channel that is super helpful is McGraw-Hill PreK-12. If you type in key words from the standard like “main idea,” inference,” “theme”, and “author’s purpose” you’ll be directed to videos that can provide a great introduction or review for your student!

Hello Middle school families. We made it to Thanksgiving break! During this week off please consider helping us by helping your student replenish their school supplies for when school starts back up. At this point in the school year, the nice new supplies we started the year with have gotten used and abused. We are struggling to maintain useable supplies. We are in most need of pencils and notebook paper and pencils and more pencils. I’m pretty sure pencils disappear. I do require that math be done in pencil and I would also like the students to have a calculator of their own. Have a safe and Healthy break!! I am thankful for the sense of community at Riverside and thankful for family!

This week was midterms! In person students have been doing a great job and many of them have begun crafting their own role-plays (historical skits.) 6th grade is learning about Egypt’s Economy. 7th grade just started learning about the Roman Empire. 8th Grade started to learn about events leading up to the American Revolution. Everyone deserves their week long break! Have a great Thanksgiving!

First off have a Happy and Safe Thanksgiving. Secondly Mid-terms should be distributed this week as well.  The majority of my traditional students are doing excellent.  I can’t wait to look over their November projects over the break.  From what has seen already they look great.  As for the hybrid and online students, this week off would be an excellent time to get caught up on much of your missing work.  Those grades are not up to the standards are set for our students.

As for the classes themselves, every class has a test on FRIDAY, NOVEMBER 20th!  It is online and in the module named November 20th quiz.  You need to make sure you go take that quiz.  When we come back on December 1st there are only 14 school days until the Holiday break.  There will be another quiz on December 17th (that is a Thursday) which means I will be live on the 16th in the morning to review.  Please make sure your students are checking in with me.  Then December 18th is the end of the quarter.  The year will be half over.

As always stay safe and healthy and have a great weekend (Week off).

The Special Education Team hopes you and your family have a safe and happy Thanksgiving. The team is so thankful to be able to get to know your students. They are a wonderful group of students and it has been our pleasure to get to know the new students this year and to grow even more fond of our returning students. We look forward to hearing all about their holidays when the students get back to school. Best Wishes, the Special Education Team.

Dear Parents and Guardians,

These colder days make us look forward to spring and warmer weather, but spring also means testing! In April, our middle school students will take the Ohio State Tests. Sixth and seventh graders will be tested in reading and math. Eight graders will be tested in reading, math, and science. These are mandatory for all students.

In order to prepare, teachers are using every minute of every bell, following state and national content standards, and developing rigorous lessons.

We know our students will make us proud!

Sincerely,

Hello Everyone,
It is great to see everyone online, I always want to remind you that if you need help submitting work, I am happy to set up a time with you. I am available Monday, Thursday and Friday after 1:30 pm for tutorial on Doc Hub or any other needs. At this time ACCEL schools are not providing paper copies of work. If you are not able to complete an assignment due to printing capabilities let me know, any cut and glue worksheets for students should just be seen as extra practice. This past week kindergartners were working on finishing up the Kindergarten Readiness Assessment or the KRA. First graders continued with solving subtraction word problems in math, we also began learning about place value. First grade also read an informational text about Sharks to tie into life sciences.

We have one more week of October left, just a friendly reminder that we do not have school on Friday. It is a teacher in-service day. Third grade will be working on retelling the story in their own words. One of the struggles that I have noticed is that the students tend to copy what they are reading as opposed to summarizing what they’ve read as a whole. Second grade will be working on describing the central idea of the story. In math, 3rd grade students are working on units of measurement they are working with milliliters, liters, gallons in ounces. In math for second graders, they will be working with addition and subtraction with the double and triple digits. Hope we have a great week.

4th/5th Grade

With colder weather approaching, students will need to dress for this colder weather while still in uniform. They cannot wear “outside” jackets in the classroom, and will need to wear navy, white, black or gray long sleeve shirts, sweaters, or cardigans without hoods or large logos. The school is able to provide a small number of these, and if you need assistance, please send a Dojo message or call me. Students should all have class dojo invites sent home, if they need another copy please let me know. This week in English, both grades are doing reader’s theatre, where we practice and analyze plays. In Math and Science, 4th grade is learning about the water cycle, different types of clouds, and are doing a GREAT job with borrowing in subtraction. 5th grade is finishing their planet projects, and plotting diagrams.

Have you heard of a chupacabra ? If not you should look them up, and talk with a sixth grader student who attends Riverside about them. We’re still working on standard R.I.6.1, and with our studies we’ve come across theses…animals (a perfect little investigation before fright night). In seventh grade this week we’re working on facilitating our own small groups and working together to strengthen our writing. By practicing this over the next few weeks I know I am going to see some great leaders emerge, and maybe a few future teachers ( R.L.7.1). In eighth grade we’ve read our first abridged version of Frankenstein and we’ve all really enjoyed it. We’re working on standard R.L.8.7 & 8.9 so next week we’ll be comparing it to different versions written by different authors.

Second quarter has started off great! We are already one week down! Students and teachers are much more familiar with canvas and how to work on and submit assignments, so this quarter will focus more on accuracy and grades instead of completion. All students are able to bring a calculator to keep at their desks and they can be used on the state test. Homework will continue to be light, and students are given the opportunity to complete work during work/study period, IF they manage their time wisely. We also do a lot of classwork, so attendance every day is very important. Math practice is available from home every night from iReady, IXL, and Brain pop. These resources can be accessed through the student canvas dashboard. Email or canvas is the best way to reach me for questions. mmcconnell@acariverside.com If you have any questions please let me know – Mrs. McConnell

This week, all students started quarter 2. Grades from quarter 1 are locked, and work from quarter 1 cannot be worked on anymore. Every grade started a new standard this week. The 6th grade started Standard 4: Egypt’s Geography. The 7th grade started standard 4: Greek Culture. The 8th grade started standard 3: The Age of Exploration. Accordion file folders were passed out on Thursday if your student had not bought one. These contain all work for social studies and must come to school every day.

This upcoming week we’re going to focus on retelling of the story for third grade as well as second grade. For math, the second graders are working on understanding place values and two digits leaving in to three-digit addition and subtraction. For the third graders we are focusing on understanding kilograms and grams this has an underlying focus of multiplication as well as division. For example, we know that one kilogram is equal to 1000 grams. Using this, I can ask a student what happens when we divide 1 kg x 10 g how many grams what we have left. If your student is struggling with multiplication it is beneficial if they have flashcards to practice at home. I hope you have a wonderful week.

4th/5th Grade

This week, students will begin working with our Title Teacher, Ms. Patton. Ms. Patton is helping students during Reading to work with small groups, while I work with other small groups! I am so excited for students to receive this differentiated instruction. Although 4th grade learns Ohio History, and 5th grade students learn U.S. History, both grades are really learning about the first people in the United States, and how they came to settle down in certain areas. For 4th grade math this week, we will work on re-grouping and adding, using place value.  5th graders have been working with simplifying fractions, this is a challenging concept, so we will probably spend most of next week practicing.

It’s the second quarter! The middle school team has truly enjoyed the opportunity to get to know your students and have been surprised with how connected we’ve become to our virtual students despite the distance. Heading into second quarter my class will become more stringent with deadlines so daily attendance virtually and in person will be imperative. All of the classes I teach online are recorded. So, if your students doesn’t attend the Live Session, they need to watch the recording. On the Canvas platform the “grades” link will be super helpful for you to know if your student has missing assignments. The grade link also contains comments I’ve made to the students about the assignments they have submitted. They should really take the time to read the comments and look at attached documents that I send back to them.

The sixth graders are moving to a study of non-fiction, with the standard R.I.6.1. We will be working to provide evidence from the text for claims made (which is the perfect practice for ACE format writing). In the seventh grade, we’ll finally be moving to fictional text, and will be working to provide support for our responses similarly to the sixth grade (R.L.7.1). In eighth grade we’ll be investigating standards R.L.8.7 and R.L.8.9 in relation to Frankenstein. We’ll be using Mary Shelly’s original version as well as interpretations from other authors. I pretty excited my eighth grade class this week ! They are so insightful and developing into mature young adults and I know we’ll have great discussions surrounding this classic novel.

First quarter has gone by so quickly. This quarter was focused on getting used to using Canvas and submitting assignments. Students in traditional classrooms and online have been using our canvas classroom for all subjects and there was definitely a learning curve for all of us! Students have a weekly agenda they access through their math homepage that shows them what needs to be submitted each day. The expectation is that by second quarter, everyone knows how to find and submit assignments correctly. As the school year progresses it is more and more important that assignments are submitted correctly and on time. If you have any questions, please let me know.

This week was the last week in quarter 1! In person students wrapped up their last standard for the quarter and had some catch up time in class. The 8th grade online students had the entire week to complete missing assignments. The 6th and the 7th online students had about 2 days to complete missing assignments. Next week, quarter 2 will start. This means that online deadlines will become hard deadlines! If work is not submitted by the due date, it will not be accepted. All online work from this point must also be submitted in order. Remember, report cards are coming out soon as well!

Hello parents and guardians. The special education team is proud of the students who have been logging on, attending their classes, and completing their assignments in Canvas. We want to encourage you and your students to continue completing the assignments. We also want to encourage the students to read. Please encourage your student to read anything that interests them, it could be magazines, comic books. Anime, or library books. The special education team would like to see all of Riverside’s students increase their vocabulary and reading is one of the best ways to accomplish that goal.

Dear Parents and Guardians,

It’s almost picture day! For students who learn through traditional or hybrid modalities, picture day will be on October 21, 2020. Students will be called by class to the auditorium, and everyone will have their pictures taken.

Students who are learning virtually may report to the building on October 23, 2020, between 10:00 A.M. and 12:00 P.M. to have their pictures taken. Students will enter the door with the blue awning, must wear masks, and will have their temperatures taken before proceeding to the auditorium.

Students may be out of dress code, but they still must follow the expectations for appropriate dress: chest, stomach, and back covered; no sheer clothing; no logos advertising drugs or alcohol; etc. The entire list of what is and what isn’t appropriate can be found in the Parent/Student handbook on our website.

Sincerely,
Ms. Lucas

Grab and Go Meals

Hybrid students will bring meals home every Wednesday.

Online families may pick up meals by pulling up to the kitchen door on the east side of the building. Pick up is on Thursdays from 12:00 P.M. to 1:30 P.M.

Upcoming Events

October 16 – End of First Quarter
October 21 – Picture Day for Traditional and Hybrid Students
October 23 – Picture Day for Virtual Students (10:00 A.M. to 12:00 P.M.)

Reminder

With colder weather comes changes in what students want to wear in the building. However, coats, hoodies, and jackets may not be worn. This is a Board policy that is explained in the Student-Parent Handbook. If students are cold, they may wear only solid colored white, gray, navy, black, or beige knitted cardigans or knitted pullover sweaters. Thank you for your help with this! If you have questions, please call me any time.

Hello Families,

As I was out for most of last week, the webpages have been updated. I am extending this week’s math, and English units through Friday October 16th. In English this week first grade started on identifying similarities and differences in a text during live sessions. While continued to work on phonics and grammar skills. Kindergarteners continued to work on their alphabet and sight words. In Math this week, first graders have started working on one step word problems during live sessions.

We are down one more week in October. Due to mock testing on Tuesday and Wednesday we will revisit describing characters. With describing characters, we are focusing on traits, motivations, feelings, and actions of the character. This is going to require that the students use the key details that they have been taught and weeks prior understand how the character feels and shapes the story. For math in second grade, they will be working with double digit addition and subtraction. For third grade we are taking one step towards counting in multiplication and telling time. The students will use multiplication skills to be able to read clocks and be able to tell time.

Hope you have a wonderful week!

This week in English, both grades are learning inferences. Inferences are real life skills where a conclusion is drawn based on evidence. In Math and Science, 4th grade is learning about the water cycle, and factor trees and rounding numbers. 5th grade is learning about planets, and translating improper fractions to mixed numbers.

Hello to all Parents & Guardians:

Our novel discussion has started and I need your help families.  Please remind your students to read their assigned chapters and refer to their Study Guides on a daily basis.  Feel free to read with your student and if time doesn’t permit, always ask your child to give you a summary of what they’ve read.

As a reminder, please check the “Announcement” selection BEFORE joining the Conference.  I will post updates there that may affect our class.

Fifth (5th) graders have been learning about adding and subtracting decimals and applying those skills to adding & subtracting money. Fourth(4th) graders are mastering rounding & estimation. Both grades are learning reading & writing concepts, such as, Narrative writing, how to read Technical/Informational text and then applying those skills on assignments.

I will be trying new incentives for the second quarter for the mailings were becoming costly.  I will be using “Virtual Incentives” such as, virtual stickers, Pajama Day, note from teacher, Art Day, and a host of other virtual treats!!

Again, thank you for your support.

It was great speaking with many of you during parent-teacher conferences. There is nothing like the team work that we’re able to create once we join forces ! This week we’re wrapping up our standards and getting ready for a strong finish to quarter one ! During second quarter you can help your student by checking their “to-do list” that’s housed on the welcome page for each of their classes. The “to-do” list is on the right side of the screen, in blue font, and is a list of what the student has to complete, and the deadline for the assignment. If the student has submitted the assignment, the assignment will then disappear from the list. But be warned ! Canvas doesn’t filter if the assignment is complete, it just simply notes if some document had been turned in…

Math
Mrs. McConnell
mmcconnell@acariverside.com
This week in math…the quarter has flown by so quickly! It’s hard to believe how much we’ve already learned. At this grade level, students are able to use a scientific calculator on the state test. We have been going over calculator functions in class, and I only have a few to lend. In addition to not having enough for every student, COVID restrictions do not allow me to share calculators between the students or between the separate classes. I would like each student traditional AND online, to have a scientific calculator of their own. You can find these in most stores like Walmart, Target, Meijer, Walgreens. I have seen them for around $7-$15 and it should last several years. This will be more important for them to have as the year progresses. If you have any questions please let me know – Mrs. McConnell

Social Studies
Ms. Charley
mcharley@acariverside.com
This week in the 7th grade, students spent time learning about City States and Greek Conflicts. On Thursday and Friday they completed a role play. Next week they will learn about the Greco-Persian Wars. In the 8th grade, students spent time learning about Native Americans and common issues in modern America. Next week they will be analyzing Native American presentation in popular culture. In the 6th grade, students finished up their standard about the Harappan Civilization and will have assessment days next week.

I hope everyone is having a good day and a great school year. Don’t forget to sign up for conferences on Monday October 12th.  They are virtual and will be done through your students Canvas accounts.  Also please make sure that your students are logging into Canvas Daily and that they are going into all of their classes daily.  I do live sessions for 25 minutes on Monday, Thursday and Fridays; barring any unforeseen problems.  My home page has their daily agenda of work and links to various programs they should be doing every week; IXL, Newsela, and Brain Pop.  Also I put up their tests and class work in the modules.  There is a live test as we speak for 6th and 7th grade.  That test will only be available until Saturday.  When the test is over.  8th grade will have a test launched on Friday.  Students need to be taking these.  On to the week that was.  6th grade is in nearing the end of their rocks and minerals unit.  It was a very long unit.  We will be moving into Soil and layers next.  7th grade we are in the middle of the cycles of mass and energy.  We will be continuing on this for some time.  8th grade is ending force and motion and we will be starting the layers of the Earth, Plate Tectonics, Volcanos and Earthquakes.  If you have any questions or need me please email me at smvoegele001@acariverside.com.

Intervention Specialists

Hello, Parents and Guardians. Hopefully, by now, your students have developed a routine and are completing and submitting their assignments either in person at school or on line. In middle school, modified math tests are on Canvas. Please have your virtual middle school student look for the modified tests when they are prepared to take the tests. For the hybrid and traditional elementary and middle school students, the students take modified tests in a quiet room and are allowed frequent breaks.

A great way to increase your student’s reading ability is to increase their vocabulary. Encourage your students to read articles/books/magazines that interest them and then have them look up words that they don’t recognize.

With the Fall season upon us, it’s a great time to read a book during those rainy and blustery days.

Please feel free to email or call us anytime with questions.

Dear Parents and Guardians,

Although these are uncertain times, one thing is certain – Your child’s education is important! If your student is attending school traditionally, they need to be here every day unless they are sick. If your child is learning through the hybrid model, they need to attend every Tuesday and Wednesday unless they are sick and need to log at least 5 ½ hours of work for the days they work from home. Your online students must log 5 ½ hours for every school day. This will help prevent them from getting behind in their work or being considered truant from school.

If you need help at any time, please contact your child’s teacher. We are here to help any way we can.

We appreciate everything you do to encourage your child and support their education!

Sincerely, Ms. Lucas

I promised you all information on how to assist your students with content we’re working on in the classroom. The first thing you need is the standard your student is currently working on. This week 8th grade is working on R.L.8.2, seventh grade is R.I.7.3 and sixth grade is R.L.6.3. With these standard numbers you can simply google the letter and number combination or put them in the search box on certain websites. Each week, for the next coming weeks I’ll introduce you to a website that you can type the letter and number combination into to give you free activities and worksheets that can help your student. This week’s website is ereadingworksheets.com The website is fairly simple, and again has a search tool where you can type in the standard (i.e. R.L.8.2).  Let me know how it works!

Math
Mrs. McConnell
mmcconnell@acariverside.com
The week ahead – Now that iReady diagnostic tests for math should be finished, Your student should spend 10 minutes a day in iReady math working on their “my path”. This will help with math fluency and targets skills that are specific to your student. 6th grade math is focused on ratios and using tape diagrams to model the relationships between numbers in the real world. We are extending that thinking into fractions and finding equivalent fractions. 7th graders are learning more about integers and extending their knowledge and thinking into rational numbers, such as fractions and decimals. 8th grade has wrapped up learning about the properties of exponents and will use that knowledge to learn about exponential growth and scientific notation. As usual, please contact me with any concerns. – Mrs. McConnell

6th Grade: Now on Standard 2: The Indus River Valley.

7th Grade: Now on Standard 3: Greek Conflicts.

8th Grade: Now on Standard 2: The First Nations.

Please remember to send accordion files with your student as some of them are still missing these. They keep papers from each standard organized. Online and Hybrid students have work due in my class every day and can fill out the live check-in form up to the end of today.

Science
Mr. Voegele
SMVogele001@acariverside.com
Welcome from middle school science.  Many parents and guardians are wondering where the homework is at.  To answer that is that we do much of the work in as classwork during the last 10 to 15 minutes of class and students have work study where they have time to complete their assignments.  So far almost all of the traditional class have been doing an outstanding job with their class work.  As for what we are studying the 6th grade is continuing with the ROCK CYCLE.  Ask your child what are the three types of rocks and how are they filmed.  7th grade we are moving into the CONVERSATION OF MASS.   8th grade we will continue on FORCES.  I would suggest you ask your child daily what did they learn in science class.  Our goal is to learn at least one new knowledge a day.  If you need anything you can call the school or email me at smvoegele001@acariverside.com. Have a great weekend.

Dear Parents and Guardians,

At Riverside we are diving into testing! Why test so early? The results of testing, when used appropriately, make us better teachers. Tests can hold everyone accountable and steer our instruction. I’ve often heard the quote, “What gets measured, gets done.” We know that not all learning can be measured with a test and at times it may feel like tests are taking over our lives, but we must continue to measure and adapt. Please see information from Mr. Gray, Director of Academics, below. We will continue to notify you of important testing dates, so we can work together for our students’ success!

Sincerely, Ms. Lucas

This week the middle school took an assessment called the iReady Reading Inventory that determines reading grade level equivalency for students. If you ask your student what reading level they are on they should be able to communicate that to you. Students also have a sheet that lists specific domains in reading that they may need assistance with, and areas they are excelling in. Ask your student about this document and the goals we’ve set for them this school year. It will be a great conversation starter and opportunity to discuss goals for this school year and matriculating eventually to high school!

Math
Mrs. McConnell
mmcconnell@acariverside.com
Middle school math is going full steam ahead! We were able to finish the iReady diagnostic last week, which gives us a great tool for math education at school or at home. The expectation is that your student spends at least 45 min a week on iReady. If you are a traditional student and need help accessing iReady from a home device, please let me know. We will do what we can to help you. Homework this year in math is focused on practice and demonstrating skills, not on repetition. There may be days when your child has a few problems for homework and there may be times when they were able to finish work at school. Please don’t be concerned if it looks like math homework isn’t coming home. As usual, please contact me with any concerns

Social Studies
Ms. Charley
mcharley@acariverside.com
This week, the 6th and 8th grades finished their first standard. Next week, we will be starting the second standard in both grades. The virtual and hybrid sections are within 2 days of traditional students. Online, we started using some new technology like jam board and EdPuzzle. Remember, virtual and hybrid students have assignments posted at the latest each morning and should be making submissions every day.

Science
Mr. Voegele
SMVogele001@acariverside.com
Good day everyone, this is your weekly middle school science update from Mr. Voegele. I hope everything finds you safe, healthy and happy. This week in 6th grade we are continuing on our voyage into the field of geology. This will last most of the first half of the school year. 7th grade next week will be our midpoint on the periodic table and atoms. This is a short unit. 8th grade will be working on force and motion for some time. Special shout out to my 8th grade traditional students for an excellent job on their first assessment of the year. Average score was an A! Parents please remember that if you students are at home I am holding virtual classes Monday, Thursday and Friday. The times are in their weekly assignment in the Module section of the Canvas. Have a great weekend. Mr. Voegele is out.

Intervention Specialists

Parents/guardians, please check with your student(s) to see if they have finished their online iReady assessments (Math and English). These assessments are very important because they help the student’s teachers know where the student’s strengths are and where they may need some additional help.

Please call us or email the Special Education team if you have any questions about the assessments or about their classwork. Our phone number is: 513.921.7777 ext. 40904.

Physical Education

Mr. Holland
iholland@acariverside.com
We will start off with our normal stretches (arm rotations, push-ups, jumping jacks etc.)
After stretching we will do our cardio/rhythm & dance. This is a fun activity for students. This part of the lesson is big on following directions. We do the cha-cha slide, freeze dance, and freestyle dancing as well.

This week we will learn four of the bodies functioning systems (muscle system, urinary system, skeleton system, and endocrine system). Students will learn what these systems are responsible for. We will watch videos to get a visual of how these systems work, and what they look like.

Music

Ms. Sargent
hsargent@acariverside.com
This week in music class, students K-8 worked on quarter notes, quarter rests, and eighth notes. Additionally, students in grades 4-8 are continuing to master sixteenth notes. Grades 2-8 also took a trip to Australia to explore the country’s music, and they studied music by one of the most influential composers, Haydn. Grades 2-8 also began Recorder lessons this week, while kindergarten and first graders began learning the instruments in an orchestra.

Dear Parents and Guardians,

Research says that children with food in their stomachs have better focus which leads to learning. We are happy to announce that Riverside Academy, in conjunction with the Freestore Foodbank, is opening a food pantry! We are working on the details now and hope to have everything set up for distribution by the end of September.

We are proud to say that every student attending school traditionally receives free breakfast and free lunch. Grab N’ Go Meals were sent home with hybrid students on Wednesday. Food was given to each hybrid student in attendance. Unfortunately, it was a lot for some of our little ones to carry. If you would rather pick up the food, please call the office and let us know. If you would like to opt out of the food distribution completely, please let us know that also. Otherwise your hybrid student will bring food home every Wednesday. Parents of students who are completely online may pick up five days of frozen meals. Meals may be picked up in drive through fashion at the kitchen door on the east side of the building. Pick up is available this week from 12:30 P.M. to 1:30 P.M.

Our mission at Riverside Academy is to serve the whole child and to support families any way we can. Providing food is one more way we show that we are a small school with a big heart!

Sincerely, Ms. Lucas

Student/Parent Handbook

Please read through the Student/Parent Handbook and discuss the expectations and procedures outlined with your student. Next week you will be asked to verify that you have familiarized yourself with its contents. Thank you for your help with this!

Dear Parents and Guardians,

We’ve made it through our first three days, and they have been wonderful!

Our school is open for learning! The list below represents a few of the changes we’ve made to make our building safer:

  • We removed excess furniture from rooms to allow for physical distancing and easier cleaning.
  • Everyone has their temperature taken upon entrance to the building.
  • Everyone wears a mask all the time.
  • Students have assigned supplies and work spaces.
  • Students eat breakfast and lunch at their assigned spaces.

Thank you to all of you who trust us with your precious children.

Thank you to a fantastic staff who has shown creativity, passion, and flexibility. If you know someone looking for a small school with a big heart, tell them to try Riverside!

Sincerely, Ms. Lucas
